ROAR Team Selection

In our efforts to create fair teams, this year we are going to allow coaches to select their teams. Again, the purpose is to attempt to create the fairest teams possible.

Skills Clinic

  • All participants are given a number and will perform a number of routine skills
  • Coaches will observe players and evaluate them based on their ability.
  • Evaluation numbers: 1 = Advanced Player, 2 = Good player, 3 = Average player, 4 = Beginner player
  • After evaluations, coaches will turn in evaluation sheets to ROAR staff (you will get this sheet back at the team selection night).
  • We will use your evaluations and our own to form a final evaluation of each player.
  • It is imperative that you evaluate the players skills both truthfully and accurate to help create fair teams.
  • Please bring your children to be evaluated. We don’t want to guess on their rating and we will not tolerate skipping the clinic to take your child late in the team selection.
  • ROAR staff will have grades on all players that attend the clinic for the team selection

Team Selection

  • The picking order of the team selection will be selected by random draw, immediately before the team selection.
  • The number of rounds in the team selection is dependent upon how many players are registered.
  • The team selection will be conducted in a Snake style:
    • Example of Round One: 1 – 2 – 3 – 4 – 5 – 6
    • Example of Round Two: 6 – 5 – 4 – 3 – 2 – 1
    • Example of Round Three: 1 – 2 – 3 – 4 – 5 – 6
  • Teams must select a player and cannot pass if a player is available for any reason.
  • There will be absolutely no trading or “swapping” of players or picks for any reason once the selection has begun. Once a player is selected or placed on a team he/she will remain on that team for the duration of the season, unless an unforeseen problem arises that must be resolved by the ROAR Staff.
  • Teams are NOT final. The ROAR staff reserves the right to move players if needed and are not required to provide a rationale for the decision.

Specific Team Selection Rules:

  1. Teams will receive the same number of players.
  2. Participants who miss the skills clinic will still be selected. The ROAR staff has the ability to rank players who do not attend the skills clinic.
  3. Participants who sign up after the team selection will be added to teams with available roster spots by the ROAR staff.
  4. Coaches kids will be selected based on their skills ranking. Coach kids cannot be picked by another coach in the selection.

  • 1’s will be selected in 1st/2nd round.
  • 2’s will be selected in 3rd/4th round.
  • 3’s will be selected in 5th/6th round.
  • 4’s will be selected in 7th/8th round.
  • ROAR Staff will determine the exact round that coaches’ kids get selected.
  • There will be no arguing on the ranking given to your child or the placement of that selectio pick.
  • Siblings: If you choose a child with a sibling, they come as a package deal and their sibling is then off limits to other coaches. The second sibling must be selected in a round based on their skill rating. No other coach can select the sibling, but they must be selected in a later round, chosen by the ROAR staff, to keep the selection flow.
  • Coach requests: We will not honor coach requests. The coach will have the choice to select players with requests.
  • Practice night requests: We always get a lot of requests for either Monday or Tuesday practices. We will have designations on certain players that they can only practice on a certain night. If you are a Monday coach, you will not be able to select a Tuesday night player and vice versa. We must allow this due to the number of people with siblings playing in other ROAR leagues.
  • Friend/Carpool requests: The coaches will have the choice on whether to honor these requests.
  • Once again, the ROAR staff reserves the right to move any players as needed.

Two possible questions:

  1. “What if I can’t attend the Skills Clinic?”
    • Answer: Please do your best to attend. If you absolutely cannot make it, we will be evaluating all the players and should have a rank on each of them for the team selection. You are still able to coach and still able to select. However, you are at a slight disadvantage due to missing and not seeing any of the players in person. PLEASE LET US KNOW IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO ATTEND.
  2. “What if I can’t attend the Team Selection Night?”
    • Answer: Please do your best to attend the team selection. Hopefully, we can have at least one of the coaches attend (although both are welcome). If neither can attend, we will have a ROAR representative select for your team based on the skills provided from evaluation. However, ROAR is not responsible for any unfairness of teams. PLEASE LET US KNOW IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO ATTEND.

Please come to the skills clinic and bring your child to be evaluated! It will not benefit you to not have your kid evaluated. Remember why we’re doing this.

The Why (of Selection Process):

  • We believe that allowing coaches to select their teams will allow ROAR to have the fairest teams possible. Our belief is that this will make our league better.
  • ROAR wants to improve and get better as we move forward. We hope you have seen this desire through our coach survey’s, improved equipment, and attempt to serve coaches better. We consistently hear from parents and coaches that our leagues are not competitive. We even see this each season. There is typically one good team and one bad team and others in the middle. Now, we absolutely recognize that winning isn’t everything, but we do desire for all participants, including players, coaches, and families, to have a great experience. We believe that good competitive games create a more positive experience for everyone. Team Selection is an effort to fix this problem.
  • This has nothing to do with winning and losing in and of itself. It has everything to do with us trying to do everything we can to create fair, balanced, well put together teams each season, which will lead to a better overall league.
  • This process will continue to be tweaked as needed as we go on, and we are open to any suggestions from you all as well.

What the Team Selection Process is NOT:

  • An effort for us to allow coaches to “stack” their teams. If that were the case, we would not have rules for this process. Our rules are strategic and well laid out to help create balanced teams.
  • This process will not exclude any players. All players will be placed on a team.
  • It will be no different than the way we made teams before. We are just giving each of you the opportunity to assist in the process.
  • An opportunity for players to feel degraded or neglected for being selected later in the process. Only coaches and ROAR staff will be present at the selection process.
